The (Full) Moon Free For All Festival… Part 1

It’s a pretty impressive undertaking - a free gig every night for 25 days, each one curated by someone different - but it’s also a great way to establish yourself as a new live music venue. The Full Moon itself is still a fairly new addition to the Cardiff scenery and whilst they’ve had a few bands play downstairs in the main bar (notably used for the MMP TV sessions at Swn Festival), they’ve now refurbished their upstairs into a full time venue.

With so many gigs taking place, it’s hard to know what’s going to be worth your time and what isn’t so let’s have a quick look at what’s on…

  • Friday 6th - Major Triadz, Slamfish, Sandor Cosmo Dus

Like many around Cardiff, I got to know Tim (aka Slamfish) through the still ongoing free party culture. Most definitely a scene that’s carried on without me as life responsibilities overtook my partying habits, Slamfish has gone from strength to strength. Going from DJing houseparties to becoming a recognised remixer and producer with tracks being played on Radio 1, he starts the festival off with a stomp.

Here’s a little known fact for you - Sion’s dad writes for Eastenders. You’ll be glad to hear that this has very little bearing on his taste in music though! He’s had a long standing lunchtime residency at Cardiff’s Live Lounge playing every Tuesday and Thursday - a great option for for city workers to spend their lunchtime in the company of live music. This year has seen him release and album and play a solo set at Green Man. Good music for a Sunday evening.

Chains Of Hate

The COH boys have been around on the Cardiff hardcore scene, in one form or another, for as long as anyone can remember; with their guitarist starting life off in Public Disturbance, famed for having two members who went on to be in Lost Prophets. They’ve got an agressive, threatening sound and stage presence but don’t let that put you off; I’ve never seen them have a bad show.

TDOHM might be the most unexpectedly heavy band I’ve ever seen. You look at them and you expect something that may almost tinge on indie. I’ve insulted them now so I’d better make up for it… They’re one of the most deafening bands I’ve ever heard, huge, bassy riffs that thunder into your chest and leave your ears ringing. This gig sees them play their debut album in full, from start to finish.

I’ve written so many good things about Caves on Twitter that I’m starting to feel like a fanboy but they truly are great. Like a Bristolian version of This Is My Fist only much easier to see live in person, they top off a line-up of a gig put on by Cardiff’s Punk Rock Bowling League and there’s no better band for the job. Catchy, bouncy, sing-a-long punk at its finest.

  • Monday 16th - Full Moon Monday Club, Live! Featuring : They Walk Among Us, The Gramercy Riffs, The Spotted Mind
  • Thursday 19th - Zinc Bukowski, Gung Ho, Heavy Flames, Dodgem X
  • Friday 20th - DER Collective
  • Saturday 21st - Trench Foot Records presents… Tree House Fire

Weekend Round-Up

Lot’s going on in Cardiff over the weekend, starting with a bunch of stuff tonight:

Friday 18th November 2011

Dempseys: The strangely mysterious electro-indie outfit Poket Trez continue their tour of pubs around Wales, this time bringing along the absolutely fantastic Right Hand Left Hand. From what I can tell, the tour has also included Wibidi who aren’t performing tonight. However, after a year between Cardiff gigs, RHLH play their second one in two months and with an album to promote this is probably a good thing!

CF10: Long standing rock society GRIMsoc (goth, rock, industrial and metal for those not in the know) hold their first live music event of the year featuring Best In Mexico, Insuna, Ten Cent Toy and The Hunted. I’m most familiar with TCT who have been constantly gigging around South Wales and the rest of the UK for the past year making a decent name for themselves. That said, The Hunted do have a nice looking MySpace site so decide who’s doing better from that.

The Gower: A cornucopia of doomy metal headed up by Diet Pills, who I’m not overly familiar with to be completely honest. The support bands, on the other hand, are both great! Thorun, featuring former Circa Regna Tonat guitarist Jonny, are doing well with their instrumental sludgy, stoner-esque doom. There’s a lot of good things being said about the new EP, and rightly so - check it out here. Following them are Cardiff doom veterans Spider Kitten who have been around for years and continue to do well.

On a note of interest, I’m pretty sure I saw Spider Kitten play one of their first gigs at GRIMsoc live music event about 8 years ago.

Saturday 19th November 2011

Clwb Ifor Bach: A complete change of scene with Dodgy on their reunion tour. Being touted as being the “definitive” line-up, the band have had an album in the works for something like 2 years now so expect to hear new material, the first since 2001’s Real Estate. It’s been a long time since I considered myself a Dodgy fan and I don’t think I’ve seen them since a free festival in Kent over ten years ago but they were very enjoyable indeed.

Sunday 20th November 2011

O2 Academy Bristol: Back in the UK after headlining Green Man earlier in the year, Explosions In The Sky bring their sweeping, post-rock soundscapes to the West Country. Despite being a huge fan of them on record, I’ve never been entirely captivated by them live. That said, I love the Bristol Academy so I’m very much looking forward to this show.

And a bonus treat:

Monday 21st November 2011

Bogiez: Californian ska punk veterans Voodoo Glow Skulls in my very town (again)! Can’t wait for this show, along with support from the absolutely awesome Tyrannosaurus Alan, I can’t think of any better way to spend a Monday night.
